When I was a kid my parents smoked and we used to go with them to Chabanel Street to buy cheap fabrics for my Mom's sewing. I have vivid, vivid memories of being stuck in the car with my sister and Dad one day when it was raining, while my mom shopped. The damp, the sickly taste/smell... it still makes me feel a bit pukey I think that anything with a narrative, or anything associated with a smell or a taste (as opposed to facts and memories associated with “now on June 12 in some year a long time ago such and such happened” ;) sticks in your head a lot longer.
